RAIPUR, Nov. 1: As five helicopters painted the skies over Nava Raipur with breathtaking formations ahead of Chhattisgarh Foundation Day celebrations, many spectators were left wondering about the story behind the Indian Air Force’s celebrated Sarang Team.

Few know that the word “Sarang” means peacock, India’s national bird. Just as the peacock symbolizes grace, beauty and pride, the Sarang Aerobatic Display Team represents skill, discipline and precision in the skies.

Formed by the Indian Air Force, the team is unique because it is widely recognized as the world’s only helicopter aerobatic display team performing with a five-helicopter formation. Flying in extremely close proximity, the pilots execute complex manoeuvres that require split-second coordination and absolute trust in one another.

What appears effortless to spectators is actually the result of months of training, rigorous planning and countless practice hours. During crossover manoeuvres, helicopters often pass each other at high speed while maintaining razor-sharp accuracy.

Over the years, the Sarang Team has represented India at major air shows and aviation events across several countries, showcasing the professionalism and capabilities of the Indian Air Force. Their displays combine military precision with visual spectacle, making them crowd favourites wherever they perform.

The team’s appearance during Chhattisgarh’s Rajyotsav celebrations added a patriotic touch to the state’s Foundation Day festivities, drawing thousands of spectators to Sendh Lake in Nava Raipur.
