In a bid to promote sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (NIBSM), Raipur, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bemetara and the Agriculture Department, organised a farmer awareness programme at Gram Panchayat Janta in Bemetara district under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan 2026.

The programme witnessed active participation from local farmers, public representatives and agricultural experts. Gram Panchayat Sarpanch Pooja Mishra and other local representatives were present on the occasion.

During the interaction, scientists Dr. S.K. Jain and Dr. Mallikarjuna Jeer held discussions with farmers on key issues related to soil health conservation, balanced fertiliser use, organic and natural farming practices and crop residue management.

Experts explained that the primary objective of the campaign is to improve soil health, encourage scientific and need-based fertiliser application, conserve water resources and promote environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. They also highlighted the importance of climate-resilient farming methods to ensure long-term productivity and sustainability.

Scientists advised farmers to rely on soil testing before applying fertilisers and encouraged greater use of organic manure, compost and other biological resources to reduce excessive dependence on chemical inputs. Farmers were also urged to avoid crop residue burning and instead adopt proper residue management practices to enhance soil fertility and increase organic matter content.

The programme provided a platform for farmers to directly engage with agricultural scientists and discuss practical challenges faced in farming. Participants received guidance on resource-conservation techniques and modern sustainable agriculture practices aimed at improving productivity while protecting the environment.

A total of 35 farmers participated in the awareness programme and benefited from the farmer-scientist dialogue.

As concerns over soil degradation and climate change continue to grow, initiatives like Khet Bachao Abhiyan 2026 are helping bridge the gap between scientific research and on-ground farming practices. Promoting soil health, efficient resource use and sustainable agriculture could play a key role in strengthening Chhattisgarh’s agricultural future.
